The Challenge
The Karol G Mañana Será Bonito Fortnite experience was an interactive concert event where players collected "EmPower-Ups" to combat negative energy and spread positivity. The design challenge was to create UI elements that seamlessly integrated with Karol G’s playful and optimistic brand, while staying true to Fortnite’s established style and Unreal Engine’s technical capabilities. XAMA collaborated with the team to craft vibrant, hand-made visuals that brought the digitial experience to life.
To strike the right balance between Fortnite’s defined aesthetic and Karol G’s crayon-like textures, we explored a spectrum of hand-drawn and graphic designs. The final leaderboard combined jagged, graphic bars with vibrant textures and featured a custom crown illustration for the leader, ensuring legibility, distinction, and a playful vibe.
The concert’s segmented structure required clear tooltips for various player actions. We designed a vibrant visual system that combined stylized illustrations with colorful graphics. After hand-crafting and digitizing custom illustrations, we developed responsive visuals that flashed in vibrant colors, tailored to the specific in-game directives.
Fast-Paced Exploration & Execution
Using XAMA’s proven design playbook, we rapidly explored, refined, and executed a vibrant UI system that aligned with Karol G’s brand while adhering to Fortnite’s visual standards. Despite the compressed timeline, our process enabled the team to hit key milestones. Additional UI elements, including life bars and scribbled vignettes, were conceptualized, although some were later scoped out for the project.
Effective Collaboration & Hand Off
XAMA collaborated closely with engineering to ensure all designs were both impactful and implementable. By remaining agile, we adapted when technical constraints arose and delivered easy-to-integrate assets. Alongside the finished designs, we provided comprehensive mockups and animation suggestions to ease implementation.
