XR Fitness Game: Run Legends

Run Legends is a fitness battle mixed reality game where you must run IRL (in real life) to win battles, and level up your gear. The game pairs your running pace with a dynamic audio experience to defeat enemies as you run or walk outside.

In order to help develop and validate the MVP and Open Beta features, XAMA was brought in by Talofa Games to produce the game’s UI/UX.

ITERATING FOR A CLEAR “HEADS UP” EXPERIENCE

As an outdoor game, we needed to encourage player’s to not fixate on their phone’s screen as they run in battle. We iterated on several different designs that aimed to solve the following: How might we create clarity to the player about their battle status in a safe way?

 After iterating on several designs, we settled on two solutions. The first is a non-explicit audio cue that mimics the sound of bike gear changes and wind blowing to indicate the player's speed and triggered skills.   The second solution is a minima

After iterating on several designs, we settled on two solutions. The first is a non-explicit audio cue that mimics the sound of bike gear changes and wind blowing to indicate the player's speed and triggered skills.

The second solution is a minimal vertical speedometer interface that conveys the player's speed and which skills are in use.

By testing and refining both solutions, we created a "heads up" experience that enables players to focus on the game while remaining aware of their outdoor surroundings.

The game's unconventional XR designs posed usability challenges beyond traditional mobile game practices. XAMA supported the team in integrating UX into their production pipeline, and recommending testing and analysis methods to overcome these challenges.
